I’m not good at applying makeup but you’d have to be a moron not to be able to put on lipstick.
— Iris Apfel

Whilst this may be true Iris, putting on the right lipstick isn’t always so simple!

Selecting the perfect lipstick is definitely a skill and maybe a little bit of luck. The most important thing is to accurately assess the undertone of your skin, armed with this knowledge everything becomes clear.

What if I don’t know my undertone?

… If you aren’t sure there is an old trick that works pretty well. The veins on your wrist tend towards either a blue or green shade. Blue indicates a cool undertone, (pink) and green indicates warm (yellow). If the colour is Indistinguishable, this generally indicates a neutral palette.

If you are still no closer to solving the puzzle, there is another trick that may help. Hold a piece of white paper up to your neck in natural light, in comparison, your skin should appear either more yellow or pink.

No matter what your skin tone is, whether it be pale, medium, or dark the same rules apply…

Cool undertone skin should wear a lip colour with a cool, blue, or purple based. A raspberry red, deep wine, brown-red,  or a pink based nude.

Warm undertone skin should wear a lip colour with a warm base, Orange or yellow-based. An orange-red, coral, or peach based nude.

A neutral undertone allows you to swap between all cool and warm colours with ease, lucky you!

Armed with this knowledge the rest is up to you. Play with different shades, textures, finishes, and intensities within your tones. Ultimately, if you love a colour and it makes you feel fabulous, WEAR IT!
